Learning outcome two which states that a student must “be able to integrate their ideas with those of others using summary, paraphrase, quotation, and synthesis of relevant sources” was a huge part of English 110. Each paper that we wrote involved using other sources as evidence to support our argument and back up our claims. In my second paper, I used the works of three different authors, Steven Pinker’s “Science Is Not Your Enemy,” Yo-Yo Ma’s “Necessary Edges: Art, Empathy, and Education,” and John Lehrer’s “The Future of Science…Is Art?” as support for argument that art and science should remain separate in the classroom. I feel that after having written three papers involving the works of other authors and integrating my ideas with theirs I have shown my ability to select, integrate, and explain quotations to support my writing. By using building block skills that I was taught in class such as paragraph structure, quote sandwiches, and different ways to introduce and support someone else ideas, that I can now do this fairly fluidly in my writing. Not only do I feel confident in incorporating other written works into my papers but also incorporating others multimodal aspects into my paper as well such as audio, video, the use of spacial techniques and other aspects to further improve my writing.
