Upon graduation I hope to be able to become licensed by examination in the state of Maine, which is a Nurse Licensure Compact State. Being able to test as early as possible and in a Nurse Licensure Compact State is extremely important for me as I will be doing a lot of traveling through the Army. In order to test in Maine, I would have to complete an application online and pay a fee to www.maine.gov/boardofnursing. Along with my application I also need to submit a photo of myself and a signature page, along with a school seal and administrator signature. They also could ask for court documents and evaluations, CBC, documents for accommodations, and proof of registration with Pearson if applicable. In order to apply I will also have to obtain a criminal background check and finger printing done within 90 days or submitting my application.

In the state of Maine nurses are mandatory reports. Nurses are required to report violations including fraud/ deceit, incompetence/ malpractice, unprofessional conduct, criminal convictions, and misuse of alcohol or drugs. Violations may result in various types of disciplinary actions, some involve allowing the nurse to keep their license, with sanctions that include restriction or no restrictions, or in some cases the loss of a nurse’s license. In order to help nurses who, struggle with any of these issues Maine has the Medical Professional Health Program. In cases of reports of violations nurses in the state of Maine are encouraged to have their own malpractice insurance to help protect themselves and their license in case of legal issues.
