I believe that nursing is in a way an art, and I think that the piece of art captures this belief. In my mind the art of nursing refers to how a nurse approaches caring for his/her patients, and a nurses holistic approach to patient care for the spectrum of one’s life. Nurses do not only treat the patient and their chief complaint, rather, they treat the whole patient, including different aspects of the patients physical, social, spiritual, and psychological being. As a nurse trying to treat just one of these aspects might not necessarily solve the problem. You must treat the whole patient and everything encompassing that person. I think that this art becomes a practice when a nurse applies it to each individual and understands how a person at each different stage in their life will need different aspects of holistic care addressed at different times. In my view, I feel this picture above illustrates that; it shows a person through different stages of one’s life, and for a nurse they would have to address each age/stage in the life of this patient differently. A child has different physiological or physical needs than a teenager versus an elderly person, and so on. It represents that a nurse must not only care for a patient’s medical diagnosis but the whole person no matter their age, gender, race, and no matter what stage of life they are in, consisting of holistic patient care and ultimately capturing the art of nursing.
Kamryn, great photo (thanks for referencing)! It does seem unfair that there is such a long gap between the young person and the old person!! Great interpretation and good work!
I like how you focussed on the lifetime of the patient, even though a nurse may only be caring for one stage of a patient’s lifetime. All aspects of time are still held deep within a patient and nurses take this into consideration with factors like past medical history or giving client education for their future.
Kam, I like how you addressed that nursing is caring for the whole patient, which includes different stages of there lifetime. In my post, my interpreation of my art was very similar in which I also expressed how it is important we take into consideration the care of the whole patient including physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. I feel like our posts are very similar, but I like how you focused on ageism, whereas I did not.
