In Julie Beck’s “Short Stories” she explains a how narratives can strongly influence our lives in the most powerful ways. While reading some parts of her writing really stood out to me and made me really take note of what Beck was trying to say and forced me to really think about the deeper meaning of a narrative. Beck said that “everyone has a book inside of them.” This really stood out to me and reminded me of when I was younger and was told never to judge a book by it’s cover. I have found that this is the same with people and that it is impossible to judge someone because you don’t know their story. Beck also said “The path from outside to inside and back out is winding, dark, and full of switchbacks.” This catch my attention and made me think about how everyone has the right to tell their own story and how each indivisuals story is uniquely their own and how no two people will ever have the exact same story when relating a narrative to ones own life. Lastly, another thing that Beck said that I felt was super important was that “finding a positive meaning in negative events is linked to a more complex sense of self and a greater life satisfaction.” I found this to be truly uplifting and inspirational as I feel that the only thing that one can do in the face of a hard time is try to find a positive and hold onto it. I found Beck’s unique perspective on narratives to be interesting and eye opening.
I thought that the “everyone has a book inside of them” quote was really significant too because I believe that everyone has a story, even people who claim that they don’t have one.
The quote about the path from outside to inside was good too! It didn’t stand out to me the first time but because of your explanation, I think I should revisit the quote!
I really liked your blog post! When you related Beck’s writing to your own childhood, I thought that made a very strong connection. Not judging a book by it’s cover is a very insightful way of thinking about this writing. Also, I liked the last quote you added because I feel like it can bring hope to some when they are in times of stress. I thought it was insightful relate Beck’s writing to something positive in everyday life.
This looks great. I’m curious what program you use to digitally annotate your texts? Is this a plug-in? I’d love to learn more about it.
